Pop-Up Event at FM

Pop-Up at FM in Denver – 9/20/25

This past weekend, I had the joy of doing a pop-up event at FM on Broadway in Denver.

FM is more than just a retail store, it’s owned by Fancy Matthew, a DJ (yes, with real analog records!) and a true fashionista deeply rooted in the local community. I met him through Annie, who curated my solo art show last year at Understudy, and I feel so lucky to now collaborate with him.

What I love most about FM is the vibe. The staff are genuinely kind, helpful, and welcoming. I’ve visited many beautiful and stylish/hip shops in NYC, Denver, and Japan, but often the staff felt distant or sooo unfriendly. FM is the complete opposite-every visit feels warm and inviting.

Fashion has always been complicated for me. After years of working with fashion designers, graphic designers, and artists as a textile surface designer in clothing companies, I developed a love & hate relationship with it. The hardest part was how quickly people judge others based on what they wear—whether it’s rolling pants the “wrong” way or pairing them with the “wrong” shoes. I’ve always thought that was ridiculous. Who cares what other people think? Wear what you love.

And yet, when you do wear clothes you love, something shifts. You feel different - more confident, more comfortable, more "yourself". That is the magic of textiles and fashion.

As a textile and botanical dye artist, creating clothing and accessories from naturally dyed fabrics brings me so much joy. I also collect vintage and antique textiles from Kyoto, which I incorporate into my one-of-a-kind pieces in collaboration with Mimi Shim.

Through these works, I hope people feel my deep love for botanical colors and the timeless beauty of vintage textiles. At this pop-up, I met so many wonderful people - those curious about botanical dyeing, about my installation artworks, those who had never thought about natural colors before, and those who once lived in Japan or had visited because of their love for Japanese heritage and culture. Meeting and connecting with people in this way is truly the best feeling.

Thank you, Matthew, for this amazing opportunity. I am so grateful : )
