Homage to Clyfford Still

I was inspired by Clyfford Still’s oil paintings, especially his jagged paint strokes, brilliant color choices, and use of negative space. I was also interested in his watercolor paintings, which have a very different quality from his oil paintings, as well as his life as an Abstract Expressionist.

Through my own practice of botanical dyeing, I wanted to create an artwork that responds to Still’s work without simply mimicking it. I explored his ideas through my own materials, processes, and language, using natural dyes and textiles (silk organza and recycled white t-shirts) to create my own interpretation.
